King Charles III will be formally proclaimed monarch today at an Accession Council which will be televised for the first time in history.

The King will make his declaration and oath in St James’s Palace at 10am.

He will be joined by the Duke of Cornwall and Cambridge as well as the Queen Consort, Camilla, along with Prime Minister Liz Truss and her cabinet.

The Privy Council, which includes politicians, senior members of the clergy and Supreme Court justices, will first gather without the King to proclaim the new monarch and arrange business relating to the proclamation.

Then the King will hold his first Privy Council and make his personal declaration and oath to “assume the duties and responsibilities of sovereignty” and follow in the footsteps of his late mother.

A Principal Proclamation will be read in public for the first time by the Garter King of Arms from the balcony overlooking Friary Court at St James’s an hour later, at 11am.

As the proclamation is read out a 41-gun salute will be fired by The King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery in Hyde Park.

It will be followed by several other proclamations around the country, with the second one in the City of London at the Royal Exchange at midday today and further proclamations in Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales at midday tomorrow.

Flags will be flown at full mast from the Principal Proclamation until 1pm on Sunday in recognition of the new monarch, when they will be lowered back to half-mast to commemorate the Queen.

It comes after King Charles held his first audience with Ms Truss at Buckingham Palace yesterday ahead of his televised address to the nation.

Despite his grief, he vowed to serve the people of the United Kingdom with “loyalty, respect, and love”.

The King also paid tribute to his mother’s “love, affection, guidance, understanding and example”.

King Charles thanks his ‘darling mama’

The King travelled back from Balmoral yesterday after rushing there when the Queen’s health deteriorated and he became King when the Queen died on Thursday afternoon.

Earlier in the day he held his first walkabout and encounter with the public since his accession as he greeted well-wishers outside Buckingham Palace.
